‘Tricky’ words are words that have a ‘tricky’ part and trying to read or write the
word using the traditional blending methods falls short. Many of the ‘tricky’
words are frequently used words, commonly used in speech and writing.

The first ‘tricky’ word, out of 72 in total, that is taught using the Jolly Phonics
program is ‘I’ and this is taught as you teach the phonic sound ‘/sh/’
The second high frequency/’tricky’ word is ‘the’ and it is taught alongside the
teaching of the phonic sound ‘/th/(voiced)’.

Students learn how to read and write their ‘tricky’ words at the same time.
Practice is key when learning ‘tricky’ words.
